jbA were commissioned to carry out the new build project at Westbourne House School which consists of a new dorm block with two parents houses, food tech room and staff flats. In collaboration with Martin Sewell Builders, this £1.1m construction project is due to be completed in September 2013. Westbourne House had already worked with the team at jbA in the past, on the pre-prep school buildings. For this project jbA used structurally insulated panel systems (SIPS) but clad in local brick and clay tile with a slate roof to create a traditional looking building but with modern construction.
“From our perspective, this seems to have been a rapid process with construction taking only nine months, but I am conscious that jbA had been thinking, consulting, designing and revising ideas for many years before we agreed to build. The fruit of all that creative activity is a building that is elegant, spacious, distinctive and yet in harmony with those around it. We are grateful for all of their sound advice on selecting a construction method and process, and for working closely with us to refine the internal and external design while always keeping a close eye on the budget. The finished product, which is agreed by all, is excellent.”
