John Brown - Managing Director
Born and bred in Chichester John Brown has been behind some of the most beautifully designed and crafted properties in the area since setting up his architectural practice jbA in 1999.
John is a hugely experienced RIBA Chartered Architect who has been in practice for over 25 years; his extensive work stretches from residential new builds, extensions and refurbishments to commercial offices and manufacturing facilities to agricultural diversification projects.
He is an ARB Member, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Studies from Cardiff University. His work has also taken him to Southern California where he completed a 2 year stint.
Having grown up in Chichester John has a detailed knowledge of the surrounding area and understands the complexities of obtaining planning permission in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Harbour Conservation Areas and the South Downs National Park.
Leah Shanahan - Partner LLP
Leah joined jbA in January 2011 and recently became a Partner. She is an experienced RIBA Chartered Architect who works extensively in the high end residential sector.
She gained her BA Hons in Architecture at the University of Portsmouth and then went to study for her RIBA parts 2 and 3 part time at London South Bank University. Leah has worked in architectural practice since 2003 and has a portfolio ranging from large private and social housing developments, care facilities, public buildings and leisure facilities as well as the high-end residential sector.
Leah works on a wide range of jbA projects and current commissions range from small single storey extensions to large master planning projects and one off houses.
She works closely with a team of planning consultants, ecologists and engineers, and has valuable experience in local sea fronting locations, conservation areas, the South Downs National Park and Listed Buildings.
Nat Ellis - Director
Head of 3D Visualisation
Nat joined jbA in 2003 a few years after John Brown set up the practice in Chichester.
As Head of 3D Visualisation he specialises in photorealistic 3D rendering. He has taken the lead in expanding jbA's 3D Visualisation capabilities, and in recent years has been a guest speaker at 3D Basecamp’s in the USA, Japan, and Europe were he has presented on 3D Rendering.
Nat oversees a team who produce 3D photorealistic images for all jbA’s clients which has become a vital part of the jbA design workflow. Nat qualified at Brighton University and has over 20 years experience working in the industry, on both commercial and residential projects, and over the last 15 years Nat has worked on many of jbA's award winning projects.
Nat is always looking at ways to extend his skills in 3D visualisation and continues to add to his expertise in this field.In addition to overseeing the 3D Visualisation, Nat also has many years experience in the preparation of planning applications in line with the local authorities guidelines.
Cara Davies - Director
Cara joined the practice in 2014, having previously gained experience working in a wide range of architectural practices in London and Berlin.
After completing her BA Hons in Architecture at Kingston University, Cara went on to graduate from London Metropolitan University with her Professional Diploma in Architecture, and completed her Final Professional Examination in Architecture at The University of Portsmouth.
With experience in high quality residential design, Cara manages projects from initial concept design through to on site contract management, ranging from historic properties which require a sensitive design approach, to innovative new build constructions.
Joe joined jbA in 2014 having achieved a 1st Class Honours Degree in Interior Architecture & Design from the Arts University Bournemouth.
He has established himself as a key member of the jbA team, with keen eye for detail in everything he does. Joe will take projects from initial design concept all the way though to practical completion, with knowledge of planning policy, building regulations and site supervision. He is a competent 3D visualiser, producing photorealistic 3D visuals that enhance the design process for the client.
He is highly organised and endeavours to make sure this is reflected on every project he works on, whether it is working to a strict programme on site or managing all finances as contract administrator.
Joe has a passion for conservation of historical buildings and has worked on numerous listed properties, dealing effectively with the challenges they present.
Head of Technical
Gary is a versatile, well respected and motivational team player with extensive knowledge of building construction gained from many years in the industry. Coupled with a varied design engineering background, he able to confidently contribute on many levels to all things technical with a pragmatic hands-on approach to problem solving.
Naturally creative, with a strong design awareness and appreciation of proportion, Gary can communicate ideas readily by freehand sketching.
He has considerable experience of low energy construction methods, in particular timber frame,
and is always happy to discuss new technologies with clients.
Gary is responsible for building regulations packages, building specifications and as a technical advisory back-up service to builders and clients alike and currently acts as a knowledge base to all members of the team to ensure that our construction packages are of the highest standard.
Elliot works alongside Nat Ellis as part of the jbA team, joining recently with qualifications in 3D Design.
Applying his knowledge of SketchUp, Adobe Software and AutoCAD Elliot is able to produce photorealistic 3D Renderings, as well as assisting with producing CAD drawings.
Additionally, Elliot has also been trained in conducting internal and external surveys. Elliot is trained in operating the in house Airwolf 3D printer to produce intricate scale models for our clients.
He is consistently eager to look for new ways with which to expand his skills and knowledge, to help him develop as a 3D Visualiser.
Tom graduated from Portsmouth University with a high upper second class BA(Hons) Architecture degree in 2017. Since joining the practice, Tom works on preparing drawing packages for planning and technical design working closely with the rest of the team with design development. Tom is able to complete measured surveys both externally and internally as well as assist with the site supervision of a project.
He has deferred to study his masters of architecture until 2019, to expand his architectural knowledge and to devote his time to jBA, seeing through all our amazing projects. With a passion for everything he does and an ever expanding set of skills, Tom aspires to produce design to the highest quality.’
Izzie graduated from Portsmouth University with a First Class BA(Hons) Architecture degree in 2017 and in the coming months will be studying for her Masters of Architecture, she is intending to continue working with us here at John Brown Architecture while she studies.
Izzie’s experience prior to her work at JBA, ranges from assisting in the renovation of a 3 bedroom cottage in Oxfordshire, to winning an international design competition with her team of five for 'Ideas Forward' in 2016. Joining the practice in July 2017, Izzie brings with her a fresh enthusiasm for design and continues to work hard to expand her knowledge. While, working with our team to produce feasibility designs, prepare statements and drawing packages for planning, and generate tender packages.
Lukasz graduated from the University of Portsmouth with a high upper second class BA(Hons) Architectural degree in 2017. Since joining the practice, Lukasz mainly worked on the preparation of feasibility study reports and planning applications, ensuring all its parts meet the criteria of the local planning authority, whilst also having a high contribution to the delivery of final design drawings for our clients.
With the experience Lukasz gained through projects at jbA, He aspires to continue his education and will therefore start his Masters in Architecture course this September.
Emma joined John Brown Architecture in February 2016 as the Accounts Manager, Emma had previously spent 10 years working for the Lloyds Banking Group after leaving education in 2004. In October 2016 Emma obtained a AAT Level 4 degree in Accountancy from Chichester university. Emma manages the day to day accounting and finances of both John Brown Architecture LTD and JB Architecture LLP.
